Hello Alder Falcon Community,
I would like to take a moment to share with you what the Fontana Unified School District, as well as Alder's staff members have been doing to prepare for the implementation of Common Core Standards. For those of you that don't know, The Common Core Standards were developed by governors and educators from all states to help unify the education that children across America receive, regardless of the state in which they live. These standards were adopted by all but 4 states in 2010, replacing their previous state standards. These standards were developed in a manner that students are required to think more in depth, site reasoning for their answers, explain reasoning in math, gather information about multiple sources and write about them, and become experts in meta-cognition. With this, we as a district and site have begun writing new pacing guides, and in the near future will begin creating updated common assessments that will be given to our students.
The district has created a RCD group (Rigorous Curriculum Design) that is currently working on creating the Curriculum Design guide for implementing The Common Core Standards. We do have teachers from Alder included within this group so our school is represented. In addition, Mrs. Willis and I have attended trainings on CCSS (Common Core State Standards) implementation with which we have begun training the staff. Our students are currently taking the SBAC (Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium), which is taken on computers and will replace the CST (California Standards Test.)
I know there are many questions and concerns about The Common Core Standards and the state test(s) that will be taken in the future, please don't hesitate to call me or stop by the school to discuss these. I am planning on having a parent workshop on Common Core before the end of the school year, I would encourage you to attend and address questions and concerns.
As we embark on this new adventure in implementation of The Common Core, please be confident that we will go above and beyond in ensuring gets the quality education he/she deserves. Once again, thank you for your support and Go Falcons!
