HOPE Art Contest
Fontana Unified School District is calling all middle school students to help them create a logo for their new HOPE foundation. The vision statement for HOPE is "Helping families and communities by providing hope and resources to children, seniors and those who are in need." According to one of the founding members, Fontana Foundation of HOPE was created to show that Fontana is one big family and we take care of our own.
Southridge Leadership would like to encourage you to participate in the creation of a logo that represents this mission. A logo is iconic like the Starbuck's mermaid, the swoosh of Nike or the Golden Arches of McDonald's. Create a logo for HOPE and bring it to the ASB room by May 1st. It will be showcased in a school art show, entered into the district competition and be auctioned off at a real Art Gallery to raise money for schools and Summer Bridge Programs in the district. The logo should include: students, sun, hope, etc. AND
represent the vision statement (in bold print above). The winner of the District's contest will win $500! If you win for Southridge you'll receive an SMS t-shirt.

Dear Southridge Families,
Welcome back to school! 2013-2014 was a great year and the Southridge staff looks forward to making 2014-2015 even better!
We want parents to be informed and involved in their child’s education! Please look for opportunities to be involved this year by getting active in School Site Council, Coffee with the Principal, or ELAC! We have made it a goal to have more family-oriented activities this year so you can participate along with your child and spend quality time together in activities here at Southridge! Keep an eye on our marquee for upcoming events!
We continue to learn more and implement the Common Core for your children. If you are not familiar, Common Core is the new set of standards that are designed to help all students learn in a deeper way. It moves away from the old “memorization” and test-taking oriented strategies and instead emphasizes that students not only learn concepts but are better able to explain the how and why’s about what they learn. It is a more “real world” application that will benefit your child in higher learning as well as real life.
We have a staff of dedicated professionals who are passionate about helping your child succeed. This year our teachers will be going through various trainings to enhance their practice. They will be training for upcoming Instructional Learning Teams, which is an exciting new district initiative which gets more information on what our individual students need directly from our teachers. There is also upcoming Instructional Rounds which will be emphasizing teachers observing and learning from each other.
We will be exploring a new RTI (Response to Intervention) strategy this year as well. When your student takes an assessment to gauge their understanding of a concept they will get results. Based on their level of understanding they will either get extra time for "reteach" of the concept or what is called "enrichment" if they mastered the standard.
At Southridge we are lucky to be able to meet the needs of both high achieving students as well as those who might need extra help with their academics. If your student is meeting grade-level standards they will be placed in a challenging and fun elective (we offer computers, music, art, and ASB) and if they need some extra help we offer intervention classes such as our I Can Learn lab for extra help in math, sections of ALD (Academic Language Development) as well as sections of Read 180 for our sixth graders.
Always remember that your child's education is a partnership between you and the school. It is my promise that the school will do all it can to help your child to succeed. What can you do? Obviously the more a parent is involved the more chance for their child's success. So just be involved; check Zangle Gradebook regularly, ensure your child has a quiet place to do their homework, ensure a solid routine in the morning and after school where the tv and video games are limited, and be sure your child gets to school on time every day!
So we look forward to helping your child become the best they can be at Southridge! We want the same thing you want for your child: Every opportunity for success in school and in life!
