Craig Baker, Principal
Julie Hansberger, Assistant Principal (Interim)

Dear Oleander Families,

Welcome to the 2014-2015 school year. This year marks the first year of full implementation of the Common Core Standards. With the move to Common Core Standards, report cards, curriculum and the assessment tools utilized to measure student learning will be different. With so many changes occurring, I invite you to be an active participant in our parent meetings.

As we move forward, know that the staff at Oleander continues to strive to provide a superior education to all of our students. As a result of the past collaboration between the staff and parents, student achievement skyrocketed. The impact of the partnership has been incredible. In the past five years Oleander has been recognized as a California Distinguished School in 2010, a Title 1 Achievement School in 2011 and 2012, and has been on the California Business for Education Excellent Honor Roll in 2011, 2012 and 2013. We are also extremely proud of the fact that we have reduced the achievement gap between our students in English Language Arts and Mathematics.

The question I am often asked is “how do you attain the results that you get?” The answers are:

  1. Our staff has formed a strong relationship with each of the students and their families. This relationship has been vital to our success.
  2. We also have excellent students, that work very hard to become better readers, writers and math problem solvers on a daily basis.
  3. Our parents and staff work together to make sure that each other is informed of what is occurring at home and in the classroom. When potential issues occur, both sides work together to ensure that the student is successful.
  4. The Oleander staff is comprised of 43 of the most passionate, dedicated and hardworking people in education. Everyone works together to ensure that every day, every student that walks on the Oleander campus is safe and will have an educational experience that will serve as a building block to future success no matter what.

While we have been incredibly successful in the past, our best days are ahead. I am very glad that you and your family are a part of the Oleander community. Looking forward to a great partnership between us.

Sincerely,

Craig J. Baker
Principal

Recogntions for the Month of December

Millie Torres
Student of the Month

Millie Torres is being recognized for her growth on the recent NWEA assessment in Math and Reading. Millie exceeded both of her Winter RIT targets in Math and Reading. Millie performed very well on the Math assessment, scoring at a mid-year eighth grade level. Millie is a model fifth grade student. Not only is she performing well academically she has excellent behavior. When other students are out the room, Millie will take notes for them so they don’t fall behind. Great job Millie!

Ms. Aided Marcial
Parent of the Month

Aided Marcial has been a very active parent at Oleander for nearly a decade! This year Ms. Marcial is the president of our English Language Advisory Council and our School Site Council. In addition, she is a member of our PTA. Ms. Marcial has been instrumental in putting in the needed work to send our students on learning experiences such as Science Camp as well as our recent visit to the University of Redlands. Through her past work on School Site Council we have been able to update the technology that our teachers and students use on a regular basis to enhance instruction. We are grateful to Ms. Marcial for all of her hard work.

Mr. Matthew Martin
Staff Member of the Month

Matthew Martin was a student at Oleander. When Mr. Martin finished high school, he returned to Oleander to serve the community. Mr. Martin has been employed at Oleander since 1998. In addition to making sure that our students are always safe, he has helped our students participate in community events. For the past two years Mr. Martin has supported Oleander’s involvement in the Kiwanis Club of Fontana’s Red Ribbon Poster contest. Thanks to Mr. Martin’s efforts, 250 of our students participated in the city-wide contest. One of our students took the top prize in the competition. Matthew takes his job very seriously. In five years Matthew has never missed a duty that he was assigned to. The Oleander community thanks Matthew Martin for all of his hard work and dedication!
