Julie Hansberger, Assistant Principal (Interim)

Dear Oleander Families,

Welcome to the 2014-2015 school year. This year marks the first year of full implementation of the Common Core Standards. With the move to Common Core Standards, report cards, curriculum and the assessment tools utilized to measure student learning will be different. With so many changes occurring, I invite you to be an active participant in our parent meetings.

As we move forward, know that the staff at Oleander continues to strive to provide a superior education to all of our students. As a result of the past collaboration between the staff and parents, student achievement skyrocketed. The impact of the partnership has been incredible. In the past five years Oleander has been recognized as a California Distinguished School in 2010, a Title 1 Achievement School in 2011 and 2012, and has been on the California Business for Education Excellent Honor Roll in 2011, 2012 and 2013. We are also extremely proud of the fact that we have reduced the achievement gap between our students in English Language Arts and Mathematics.

The question I am often asked is “how do you attain the results that you get?” The answers are:

  1. Our staff has formed a strong relationship with each of the students and their families. This relationship has been vital to our success.
  2. We also have excellent students, that work very hard to become better readers, writers and math problem solvers on a daily basis.
  3. Our parents and staff work together to make sure that each other is informed of what is occurring at home and in the classroom. When potential issues occur, both sides work together to ensure that the student is successful.
  4. The Oleander staff is comprised of 43 of the most passionate, dedicated and hardworking people in education. Everyone works together to ensure that every day, every student that walks on the Oleander campus is safe and will have an educational experience that will serve as a building block to future success no matter what.

While we have been incredibly successful in the past, our best days are ahead. I am very glad that you and your family are a part of the Oleander community. Looking forward to a great partnership between us.

Recogntions for the Month of November

Abimael Salvador
Student of the Month

Abimael has been enrolled at Oleander since Kindergarten. Never, has Abimael needed an absence note due to the fact that he has been present at school every day. Abimael is a very hard working and responsible student. His conduct on the playground, in class and in the cafeteria is always excellent! Abimael Salvador truly is a model to others for his work ethic and for being so responsible.

Ms. Maribel Morales
Parent of the Month

Maribel Morales has been an active participant in the Oleander community from the moment that her oldest daughter started preschool in July of 2008. Whenever there is a PTA event, Ms. Morales can be counted on to be there to lend a helping hand. In addition to being active in the PTA, Ms. Morales is an active participant in our ELAC and SSC. Ms. Morales has formed a strong partnership with every teacher that her two daughters have been assigned to. The Oleander community cannot thank Ms. Morales enough for all of her hard work and support to our school.

Ms. Maria Acosta
Staff Member of the Month

Maria Acosta has faithfully served the Oleander community as an aide and in the office since 2008. Maria began her career at Oleander as an aide in a special education class. In 2009, Maria became a clerk in the office. As clerk, one of her primary responsibilities was attendance verification. Oleander consistently is in the top of the district in attendance. Maria is a huge part of our success because when a student is out, she goes to great lengths to communicate to students and parents the importance of being at school as well as how much they are missed. Maria is the first person our students, parents and staff see. Every morning every person that steps on the Oleander campus is greeted warmly by Maria. On November 19, Maria will be moving to a new position in our district at the Enrollment Center. While the community is excited about Maria’s new position, she will be missed greatly.
